What is cricohyoid membrane?

The cricohyoid membrane is a thin, fibrous membrane that connects the cricoid cartilage and the hyoid bone in the neck. It is located at the level of the C3-C4 vertebrae, and is an important structure in the airway as it separates the larynx (voice box) from the pharynx (throat). The cricohyoid membrane is also a key landmark in performing emergency airway management procedures such as cricothyroidotomy. Injuries to the cricohyoid membrane can result in airway obstruction, making it a critical structure to protect in neck surgeries and trauma cases.
